Spearmint is another potentially useful treatment for hormonal-type acne. The nice thing with spearmint is that you don’t need supplements, you can just drink it as tea.
So far two studies have shown that spearmint tea has anti-androgenic effects. One study from 2007 showed that drinking 1 cup of spearmint tea a day for five days reduced free testosterone levels by 28% in hyperandrogenic women (women whose androgen levels are too high). However, this study was very short, only five days, and had no control group. So take the results with a grain of salt.
A better study from 2010 showed similar results. 42 women with PCOS were asked to drink 2 cups of either spearmint tea or chamomile tea (control group) a day for 30 days. The results showed 29% reduction in free testosterone and 23% reduction in total testosterone levels in the group drinking spearmint tea. In contrast, chamomile tea had no effect on testosterone levels.
So far, nobody has studied the effect of spearmint on acne, but many women on MakeUpAlley.com rave that a cup or two a day completely cleared their hormonal acne. Though, some complain it also caused headaches and other annoying side effects.
In short, a cup or two of spearmint tea a day seems like a promising option for women with hormonal-type acne.
Interesting Caribbean grandmothers insist drinking fresh brewed (organic) home grown spearmint clears resistant cystic acne.
